EDUCATIONAL CREDENTIAL ASSESSMENT (ECA)

An educational credential assessment (ECA) confirms that your foreign degree, diploma, or certificate is valid and equivalent to one from Canada.

ECAs are classified into several types. For immigration purposes, you must obtain an ECA. If you received another type of ECA, depending on the type of ECA and/or issuing organization, you may be able to have it reissued.

In your Express Entry profile, you must include your ECA report and the reference number.

Who Should Apply for ECA ?

If you completed your education outside of Canada, you will need an evaluation to :
be a primary applicant for the Federal Skilled Workers Program (Express Entry), or Earn points for education received outside of Canada.

  • If your spouse or common-law partner is accompanying you to Canada, you can also earn points for their education.
  • A Canadian degree, diploma, or certificate does not require an assessment.
  • To earn points, your report must demonstrate that your foreign credential (degree, diploma, or certificate) is equivalent to a Canadian secondary school (high school) or post-secondary credential.

Which credentials to get assessed

In most cases, an assessment is only required for your highest level of education.
If you have a Master's degree, for example, you only need an assessment for that degree. You are not required to have one for your Bachelor's degree.

Your assessment must be performed by an organization or professional body designated by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. They will give you a report stating what your education is worth in Canada.
