FEDERAL SKILLED TRADES CLASS PROGRAM (FSTP)
The Federal Skilled Trades Program of Canada invites semi-skilled foreign tradesmen to work and settle in Canada. If you have experience in a skilled trade that is on Canada's list of in-demand occupations, you can apply for the FSTP programme and obtain permanent residence. The Federal Skilled Trades (FST) programme is one of three federal immigration programs in Canada that are part of the Canadian Express Entry system.
Programs under the Express Entry System :
- Federal Skilled Trades Program or FSTP
- Canadian Experience Class or CEC
- Federal Skilled Worker Program or FSWP
Candidates with at least two years of experience in a skilled trade listed on the NOC will be eligible to apply for permanent residence through the Express Entry system.

Work Experience
- One year of work in the NOC-specified occupations
- Two years experience in a skilled trade
An equivalent amount of part-time work judged over the last five years
Language
- Their fluency in English language (passed in IELTS General examination)
- Their fluency in French language (passed in CELPIP General examination)
Education
In a recognized institution of Canada
- Studied for two years towards PhD
- Already had a PhD
Adaptability : Not specified
Arranged Employment :
- A Canadian employer has offered a permanent and full-time job
- Labour Market Opinion qualification for an Arranged Employment
Documents Required for the FSTP
- All the application forms completed and signed
- Processing fees as required
- Documents showing proof of your identity
- A valid passport and other required travel documents
- Proof of having sufficient work experience
- Proof of completing skills training
- Test results of your language tests
- Proof of employment offer
- Police clearance and medical clearance
- Proof of having sufficient funds for settlement
Application Process for FTSP
- Find your job under the NOC
- Get your ECA completed
- Give your language tests and obtain the results
- Complete your online application and get your CRS score
- If you qualify, then your application will enter the Express Entry pool
- If your CRS meets the minimum CRS score in any Express Entry draw then you will receive an ITA
Processing Time for FSTP
The majority of FSTP applications are likely to be processed within 6 months.
How to Apply
Immigrating to Canada via the FSTP necessitates some planning. This is how you do it.
Step 1 : Gather Your Documents - To complete the FSTP application, you must submit the following documents.
- Passport
- Language Test Results
- Educational Credential Assessment Report
- Provincial Nomination
- Written Job Offer from Employer
Step 2 : Submit Your Application - Your profile will now be entered into a pool draw for Express Entry every two weeks and ranked against other candidates. The applicants with the highest CRS scores will be given an ITA to apply for permanent residence.
Step 3 : Accept the Application Invitation - Your ITA will be sent to you via your Express Entry account. You will then be required to submit supporting documentation to demonstrate that the information provided is correct and accurate.
Costs Involved
Costs incurred through the Express Entry (EE) pathway of the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) :
- Application fee for the main applicant : 825 CAD
- Application fee for the spouse/common-law partner : 825 CAD
- Application fee for each dependent child : 225 CAD
- Right of Permanent Residence fee for the main applicant : 500 CAD
- Right of Permanent Residence fee for the spouse/common-law partner : 500 CAD
- Dependent children are exempted from the PR fee
- The biometrics fee for the main applicant : 85 CAD
- The biometrics fee for two or more people in one FSTP visa application : 170 CAD
