GLOBAL TALENT VISA - INDEPENDENT PROGRAM

The Global Talent Visa-Independent Program (GTI) is intended to provide a streamlined and priority visa pathway for highly skilled and talented individuals to permanently migrate to Australia. The government intends to attract talented individuals from around the world who are at the pinnacle of their industries in so-called "target sectors."

To attract highly skilled and talented individuals, the Department collaborates with Australian universities, industry bodies, and state and territory governments. Global Talent Officers can be found in major cities such as London, Shanghai, Singapore, Berlin, and Washington, DC. These officers collaborate with key industries to invite people to apply for the GTI program.

The Department is looking for individuals who are skilled in one of the seven target sectors and can earn a salary that meets the fair work high-income threshold, or who are recent PhD, Masters, or Honours graduates who have performed well.

The program is only accessible through a referral from the Global Talent Officers or a nominator.

  • Resources
  • Agri-food and AgTech
  • Energy
  • Health Industries
  • Defence, Advanced Manufacturing and Space
  • Circular Economy
  • DigiTech
  • Infrastructure and Tourism
  • Financial Services and FinTech
  • Education

The high-income threshold is adjusted each fiscal year and is determined by Fair Work Australia. The threshold is $162,000 this year.
The Department will assess the applicant's ability to earn the threshold through :

  • The applicant's current salary
  • Job offer outlining the salary
  • Recent PhD or Masters graduates in the target sectors.

To apply, you must first :

  • 1. Apply for a unique identifier issued by the Global Talent Officers;
  • 2. Secure a nominator; and
  • 3. If both of these steps are successful, apply for the visa.

Referred highly skilled professionals may be invited to apply for a Distinguished Talent visa.

Individuals who meet the programme requirements will be given a unique identifier. You must fill out the Global Talent Contact form and submit an expression of interest (EOI). Once submitted, you will receive confirmation that your EOI was received. The EOI does not have a set processing time. However, it is understood that these are currently taking longer than usual due to COVID-19.

A nominator will be required to nominate the applicant for the program. The nominee must have a national reputation in the same field as the applicant and be one of the following :

  • An eligible Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Eligible New Zealand citizen
  • An Australian organisation.

Depending on your industry, your nominator could be your university, your employer, an industry body, or your peers.

To determine the nominator's national reputation, a number of factors may be considered. For instance, the Department may consider the nominator's :

  • Record of achievements
  • Eligible New Zealand citizen
  • An Australian organisation.
  • An eligible Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Eligible New Zealand citizen
  • An Australian organisation.

You will be able to submit your application for the Distinguished Talent Visa once you have received the unique identifier (outside Australia). It will be a subclass 858 Distinguished Talent Visa whether you are in or out of Australia. Previously, if you were outside of Australia or had an invalid visa, you had to apply for a subclass 124 Distinguished Talent Visa.

The Global Talent Independent program no longer invites Masters and Honours students based solely on their academic credentials.

This policy change applies to all future EOI assessments and candidates who have not yet received an invitation to the Global Talent program by 20 January 2021.

Candidates who submitted an EOI prior to the policy changes but were not invited are encouraged to reconsider their eligibility and apply again if they meet the new requirements.

New eligibility requirements :
Applicants must demonstrate that they have advanced skills in one of the target industries and:

  • Prove they are internationally recognised with evidence of outstanding and exceptional achievements
  • Remain prominent in their field of expertise
  • Provide evidence that they would be an asset to Australia in their field of expertise
  • Have no difficulty obtaining employment in Australia or becoming established in their field

Individuals who have received international recognition for their exceptional achievement in a profession, sport, arts, or academia and research are eligible for the Distinguished Talent Visa. It is a visa that will allow you and your family to live in Australia permanently.

When applying for the visa, the Department will consider :
Your contribution must benefit the Australian community, the Australian economy, Australia's social and cultural standing, or raise Australia's standing in academia, the arts, or sport.

You must be internationally recognised and have been a leader in your field for the last two years.
