What are the Requirements to Study in USA

All of your educational certificates would be required if you were to apply for a Bachelor's degree in the United States. Apart from that, an IELTS score of at least 5.5 is required. The TOEFL (iBT) score should be 70-89.

Student Visa for USA from India

To study in the United States, Indian students can apply for one of three types of visas:

  • F1 Student Visa : This is the most common visa, which allows for part-time or on-campus employment as well as a year of Optical Practical Training (OPT).
  • J1 Student Visa : This visa is intended for students pursuing practical training and offers the same employment benefits as the F1 visa.
  • M1 Student Visa : Applicants will be unable to work under this visa.



Documents Required for a USA Student Visa

When applying for a student visa to the United States, you will typically need :

  • A valid passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your stay in the United States (unless exempt by country specific agreements)
  • Admission to a SEVP-approved school and your Form I-20
  • Application fee payment for the SEVIS
  • Non-immigrant visa application and confirmation page (Form DS-160)
  • Your photograph in the format and number requested

The following additional documents may be required :

  • Transcripts, diplomas, degrees, or certificates for academic preparation
  • Proof that you have enough money to cover your living expenses during your stay in the United States. This could include :
    1. Account statements

F-1 Student Visa

The F-1 Student Visa is used by the majority of students who want to study abroad. Its procedure consists of three major steps :

  • Step 1 : SEVIS fee and I-20 form collection After you pay the SEVIS fee, your new school or college will issue you an I-20 form. Fill out the form and bring it with you to your F-1 interview.
  • Step 2 : VISA fee and form collection Pay your visa fee and pick up your visa form at the designated bank. Duly fill the form and bring along for your interview.
  • Step 3 : VISA interview Make an appointment with the US embassy in your country for a visa interview. The length of the wait depends on the type of visa. If you pass the interview, you will receive your visa 120 days in advance.



Applying for your visa online

You must apply for your student visa online through the US Embassy and Consulates India website. You can apply up to 120 days before the start date of the program. Remember that your application date is the date you pay your application fee.


Visa fee

As an applicant from outside the United States, you must pay a visa application fee of US$160 (do check for the updated fee when applying here). There is now a SEVIS fee of US$350 for F and M visa applications and US$220 for most J Visa applications, which includes the cost of the computer system used to track your stay in the United States (SEVIS).



When you first arrive in the US, you must :
  • Contact your designated school official as soon as possible.
  • Make another contact with your designated school official no later than the program start date listed on your Form I-20. Making certain that your visa is still valid

Once you have your visa, there are several things you must do to keep it valid, including :

  • Fulfilling the purpose for which the Department of State issued the visa; and
  • Adhering to the regulations related to that purpose.

You must follow the following rules while studying in the United States :

  • You must attend all of your classes and pass them. If you are having difficulty with your studies, you should contact your designated school official (DSO) right away.
  • If you believe you will be unable to complete your program by the end date listed on your Form I-20, you must speak with your DSO about the possibility of requesting a program extension.
  • Each term, you must complete a full course of study. If you are unable to study full-time, please notify your DSO immediately.
  • You are not permitted to drop below a full course of study without first consulting with your DSO.
